Commercial Gritting &
Salting Services
Ireland
Met Office monitored. Nationwide coverage. Seasonal contracts from September.
O’Brien Facilities has delivered commercial gritting and salting across Ireland since 2014. With over 30 active sites, 8 dedicated snow ploughs and a data-driven trigger system, we keep your car parks, entrances and access roads safe when temperatures drop — so your business never closes due to ice.
What Sets Our Commercial Gritting & Salting Service Apart
We don’t grit on a fixed schedule — we grit when the data says it’s needed. That means fewer unnecessary visits, better coverage when it matters, and full documentation for your peace of mind.
Met Office Monitored
Every day at 12pm our team reviews Met Office site-specific forecasts for your location. If predicted overnight road surface temperatures drop below the critical threshold, we mobilise — automatically, without you having to call.
White Rock Salt Only
We exclusively use high-purity white rock salt across all sites. Unlike brown grit, white salt is more effective at lower temperatures, less damaging to concrete and tarmac surfaces, and far cleaner around your entrance and car park.
Nationwide Coverage
Our commercial gritting and salting service covers all of Ireland — Limerick, Shannon, Clare, Cork, Galway, Tipperary, Dublin and beyond. One contract, one point of contact, one consistent standard of service across every site.
Every Visit Documented
Every treatment is logged with the date, time, site location, weather conditions and materials applied. These visit records are essential if a slip-and-fall claim is ever made against your business — protecting your liability position under Irish law.
8 Dedicated Snow Ploughs
When snowfall arrives — and in Ireland it tends to arrive suddenly — our fleet of 8 snow ploughs mobilises fast. Combined with post-plough salting treatment, we handle any winter weather event your site is likely to face.
Seasonal Contracts Available
Lock in your winter gritting contract before the season starts and guarantee priority coverage from October through March. Slots fill fast, particularly across Limerick, Shannon and the M7 and M18 corridors. Book early and save.
How Our Commercial Salting & Gritting Service Works
From the moment you sign up to the moment your staff arrive safely, here’s what happens behind the scenes every winter night.
Book Your Contract
Contact us before September to secure your site. We carry out a site survey, agree treatment zones, confirm access requirements and issue your seasonal contract. No surprises, no hidden costs.
We Monitor the Weather
Each day at 12pm our operations team reviews Met Office forecasts for every site postcode. Predicted overnight surface temperatures below the trigger threshold automatically schedule a treatment run.
We Deploy Overnight
Our crews operate from early morning — typically between 2am and 6am — treating your car parks, entrances, footpaths and access roads before your team and visitors arrive. We work while you sleep.
Your Site Is Protected
Every treatment is logged with time, temperature and materials used. You receive full visit records on request, meeting your duty-of-care obligations and protecting you against slip-and-fall claims.
Gritting & Salting Nationwide Across Ireland
Ireland’s winters are wetter and milder than most of Europe — but that makes them more unpredictable, not safer. Freeze-thaw cycles, overnight frost, black ice and sudden snowfall are common from October through March, particularly across inland counties, the midlands and higher ground. Our commercial gritting and salting service is active wherever Irish businesses need protection.
Your Legal Duty of Care This Winter
- Under the Occupiers’ Liability Act 1995, Irish property owners have a duty of care to visitors — including protection against icy and slippery surfaces on their premises.
- The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires employers to manage all foreseeable risks, including winter weather hazards for employees, contractors and visitors.
- A documented gritting log is your primary defence if a slip-and-fall compensation claim is made. O’Brien Facilities provides a full visit record for every treatment.
- Insurers increasingly require evidence of a winter maintenance plan. A seasonal gritting contract demonstrates proactive risk management.
- Our visit documentation has supported clients in defending and settling personal injury claims in the Irish courts.
Frequently Asked Questions About Commercial Gritting in Ireland
The Irish winter gritting season typically runs from October through to March, with peak demand in December, January and February. Frost and ice are possible from late September in inland and higher-elevation areas. We recommend booking your seasonal contract by September to guarantee your place on our schedule — particularly in Limerick and Shannon where commercial demand is highest.
Salt lowers the freezing point of water on road surfaces, preventing ice from forming when temperatures drop below zero. Applied before a freeze event — known as anti-icing — it creates a brine layer that remains effective for several hours. This proactive approach is far more effective than de-icing after ice has already formed, and uses significantly less salt per treatment.
O’Brien Facilities uses Met Office forecast data to time treatments precisely, so your site is treated before the freeze — not after.
We provide commercial gritting and salting services nationwide across Ireland. Our core coverage areas include Limerick, Shannon, Clare, Cork, Galway, Tipperary, Waterford and Dublin, as well as all surrounding counties. If you have multiple sites across different regions, we can manage all of them under a single contract.
Pricing depends on the size of your site, number of treatment zones, access requirements and whether snow ploughing is included. We offer seasonal contracts (October–March) with fixed pricing, as well as call-out arrangements for businesses with lower frequency needs. Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote tailored to your specific site.
Yes. We operate 8 dedicated snow ploughs and provide full snow clearance alongside our salting programme. When significant snowfall is forecast, we mobilise the plough fleet first, then follow up with a salt treatment to prevent re-freezing. Both services can be included in your seasonal contract or priced separately.
We exclusively use high-purity white rock salt applied at carefully controlled rates. Correctly applied, it causes no measurable damage to tarmac, concrete or paving. Surface damage is caused by over-application of low-grade grit or impure salt — something we avoid entirely. We’ve been treating the same commercial sites since 2014 without surface damage complaints.
Yes. Every treatment is logged with the date, time, site location, weather conditions and materials applied. Full visit records are available on request and provided automatically as part of our seasonal contract reporting. These records are important for insurance purposes and as evidence of your duty of care if a slip-and-fall claim is made under Irish law.
